Hello everybody or nobody,
My name is Mickel Zuidhoek and this is my first foray into the blogosphere.
This blog will primarily be an overflow vessel for my own thoughts on education, focusing on the need for change and the direction this change should take. I would love nothing more than to have you comment to create a kind of discussion forum or at least simply read the meanderings of a frustrated yet optimistic mind.
My trade is in carpentry where I have spent the last 27 years restoring older homes to there former glory. In that time I have also spent 15 of those years teaching both full time and part time. I currently run a side business to my contracting work where I teach people to renovate in their own homes.
To outline the blog my definition of education is different than the traditional public definition. Our current education system is born out of the industrial revolution of the need to train a workforce to power the machinery of society. My definition of education is simply the process of development of the whole human being, including but not limited to, the development of career skills.
It is my view that the limits of civilization lie in the expansive education of our children…
